Reframing Goals and Resolutions: Intentions for a Balanced 2025

As the new year approaches, many of us find ourselves staring at empty planners, contemplating our goals and resolutions for 2025. With the best of intentions, we often set out to improve our health, relationships, and overall well-being. Yet, as we dive into our aspirations, we can feel overwhelmed by emotional baggage, busy schedules, and the pressures of daily life. What starts as optimism can quickly devolve into frustration when old mental patterns and habits resurface.

Optimism to Frustrion
When old mental patterns and habits resurface.

This year, I want to invite you to reframe the way you think about goals and resolutions. Instead of focusing on lofty resolutions that can feel daunting or even misaligned with what you truly need, let’s create intentions and make small, actionable decisions. For those of you who have set broad, ambitious goals that already feel like they’re slipping away or simply don’t resonate with your current needs, you’re not alone. Together, we can find a more fulfilling path forward.

Common Resolutions and Their Pitfalls

Some of the most common New Year’s resolutions include:

  • Losing Weight
  • Exercising More
  • Eating Healthier
  • Managing Stress
  • Improving Relationships
  • Quitting Bad Habits (like smoking or excessive drinking)

While these resolutions are well-meaning, they often fail for several reasons:

1. Lack of Specificity

Many resolutions are vague and lack clear, actionable steps. For example, saying "I want to lose weight" doesn’t provide a plan for how to achieve that goal. Instead, a more specific resolution like "I will walk for 30 minutes five times a week" gives a clearer path to success.

2. Unrealistic Expectations

Setting overly ambitious goals can lead to disappointment and frustration. When people set goals that are too lofty, they may become overwhelmed and give up altogether. For instance, aiming to lose 30 pounds in a month is not only unrealistic but can also lead to unhealthy practices.

3. Lack of Accountability & Support

Without support or accountability, it’s easy to let resolutions slide. Many people embark on their wellness journeys alone, which can make it difficult to stay motivated. Support from a community or a coach can provide the encouragement needed to stay on track.

4. Ignoring the Inner Work

Perhaps the most significant reason resolutions fail is that they often overlook the importance of inner work. Many individuals focus solely on external changes—like diet and exercise—without addressing the underlying emotional and psychological factors that contribute to their current state. This is where the concept of inner work becomes crucial.

5. Lack of Clarity on 'Why'

Another critical factor in the success of resolutions is understanding the deeper motivation behind them. Clarifying "why" a goal is important can provide the emotional fuel needed to stay committed. For example, instead of simply wanting to lose weight for aesthetic reasons, consider how achieving this goal might lead to increased energy, improved self-esteem, or a healthier lifestyle that allows you to engage more fully in life.

Intention is powerful
Allows for flexibility, growth, and a deeper connection to your personal journey

This year, rather than setting rigid resolutions, I encourage you to focus on intentions. Intentions are about aligning your actions with your values and desires, creating a foundation for meaningful change. They allow for flexibility, growth, and a deeper connection to your personal journey.

Steps to Create Your Intentions

  • Clarify Your 'Why': Understanding why your intentions matter to you can transform them from mere wishes into meaningful pursuits. This clarity can help maintain motivation during challenging times.
  • Identify What You Want More or Less Of: Take a moment to reflect on your life. What aspects bring you joy and fulfillment? What areas feel draining or unbalanced? This reflection will guide you in crafting your intentions.
  • Start Small: Instead of overwhelming yourself with big goals, focus on small, actionable decisions that you can build upon over time. This approach allows for gradual change and avoids the pitfalls of unrealistic expectations.
  • Cultivate Mindfulness: Mindset and mindfulness are key to creating sustainable change. Pay attention to your self-talk and thought patterns. We can't plant the seeds of transformation and expect them to flourish if our minds are filled with weeds of self-doubt and negativity.
