Let’s be honest—life can get overwhelming. Stress piles up, and before you know it, you’re stuck on autopilot, reacting to everything instead of really responding. And that constant state of stress? It wears us down—mentally, physically, emotionally, even spiritually and energetically.
I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately, especially while reading The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest. The book dives into self-sabotage, and one idea really hit home: You are the variable in your growth. It’s not the problems or challenges themselves that make you stronger—it’s how you choose to respond and adapt.
You don’t have to change how you see the world, but changing how you behave in it? That’s where the magic happens.
Wiest talks about something called principles—these are the solid, unchanging truths that can guide your life. Think of principles as the foundation you build on. They’re different from values, which are personal and subjective. Principles are universal and objective.
For example, a principle might be something like “eat nourishing food every day.” It’s simple, but when you stick to it, it leads to better health over time.
Here’s the thing: inspiration and motivation only take us so far. Without principles, we’re stuck in cycles of doing the same things that don’t serve us, over and over again. Principles are about the little things we do consistently that add up to real, lasting change.
This is where mindfulness comes in. Mindfulness is all about paying attention—really noticing what’s happening inside and around you without judgment. It’s about creating space between what happens and how you respond.
When you practice mindfulness, even just for a few minutes a day, you start to catch yourself when you’re slipping into old habits or reacting out of stress. You get a chance to pause and ask, “Is this really how I want to respond?”
It’s not about instant fixes or quick wins. It’s about building a steady, reliable way to live that supports your goals and your wellbeing.
We all know stress isn’t good for us, but did you know it actually messes with your body’s systems in a big way? When you’re stressed, your body goes into fight-or-flight mode, flooding you with stress hormones. That’s great if you’re running from danger, but not so great if it’s happening all day long.
Mindfulness helps switch on your body’s “rest and digest” mode—the part that calms you down and helps you heal. When you take a mindful breath or check in with your body, it tells your brain, “Hey, it’s okay. We’re safe.”
And beyond that, mindfulness helps you see your thoughts and feelings clearly. Instead of getting caught up in stress or negative self-talk, you learn to observe and choose a different path.
